View Full Version : [ubuntu] Have setup mobile broadband but there is no way to run it?

I am trying to use a UK Vodafone K3570-Z USB as my mobile broadband. When I put it in the USB the CD icon comes on the Desktop but this only contains the Windows files (to set up the software and these will not work with wine).

I run the "wizard" thing in Network Manager which seems to work since my phone number appears under "mobile broadband" along with a username and password (both "wap"). The APN is pp.vodafone.co.uk.

However, that's it. Unlike wireless or ethernet or VPN connections there does not seem to be a way I can select this new connection e.g. when going to the icon on the panel at the top right. So, even if the connection will work, I don't know what to click to load it!

I am using 10.04.

Here is the lsusb -v which recognises the modem - I've included all of it which may be unnecessary so I've copied the specific section here:

It should appear some thing like this:

http://myn900.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/1.png?w=412&h=322

I also use a Vodafone Pen with no problems.

See ya...

This is precisely my problem. I do not have the mobile broadband possibility in the menu.

I have rebooted, the USB stick is in, and the light on it is flashing.

The panel shows the following possible connections:

Wired.

Wireless.

VPN.

My Mobile broadband connection in Network Manager looks like the screenshot.

I just need to know what to click on to see if I can connect!

I will attempt to explain this issue with more detail.

I have set up using Network Manager a Mobile Broadband connection. The number and APN appears. The name is "Vodafone TopUp and Go".

However, while I have the option of selecting a Wired network, multiple wireless networks, and VPN networks, there is no option to select the Vodafone TopUp and Go mobile broadband network.

There simply is nothing to click on.

One issue is that when I click "edit" to look at the options Network Manager demands my password. This does not happen when I try to edit any of the other networks (wired, wireless, etc).

Perhaps this is why I do not have the option of selecting a mobile broadband connection - because is it demanding root privileges.

Any ideas how to overcome this issue?

I wonder if anyone has any more advice?

To clarify:

I am trying to use a UK Vodafone K3570-Z USB as my mobile broadband. I am using 10.04.

I think my problem is something to do with permissions - let me explain.

I put the device in the USB. After a few seconds the light comes on. Lsusb finds it.

I run the "wizard" thing in Network Manager to set up a mobile broadband connection. It gives me an APN. All seems fine.

When I click on the icon on the panel that allows me to select my networks I have the option of using wired, wireless, or VPN. But there is nothing for the mobile broadband network I have setup. Even after a reboot.

The reason I think this is a permissions issue is because when I try to edit the settings in network manager I get the request for a password box which means root privileges are required. When I click "details" the box shows:

Action: org.freedesktop.network-manager-settings.system.modify
Vendor: Network Manager

When I edit settings for wired, wireless, and VPN networks I am not asked for my password.

The only thing I can assume is that the permissions are preventing the icon on the panel from displaying an option to select mobile broadband.

I have been in contact via PM with other people using the same mobile broadband. They all say that the mobile broadband option just appears in the menu with no problems.

I was advised to ensure I was a member of the plugdev and netdev groups - this is the case.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I did read somewhere that ZTE modems also function as storage devices and this interferes with nm-applet's ability to use them as network interfaces.

If your modem appears as a storage device, try dismounting it then

killall nm-applet
nm-applet
Now nm-applet may be able to see it.(?) HTH.

Hi

can post details of these commands from the terminal

Code:

usb-devices

locate the lines which indicate the device and post only those lines

Code:

which modem-manager

Code:

which usb_modeswitch
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~#
Just looked up the latest usb_modeswitch data. The device is not listed
Can try this from the terminal
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/zte_eject.rules
add this line
SYSFS{idVendor}=="19d2", SYSFS{idProduct}=="1007", RUN+="/usr/bin/eject %k", OPTIONS+="last_rule"
save the file exit and reboot
of note: from the first post info
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 19d2:1007 ONDA Communication S.p.A.
bNumInterfaces 1 := possible the device has not switched
Bro, I checked the pic you attached and I noticed that you the icon that looks like the one on a phone showing the signal strength. Did that show up after you plugged it in/when you booted up w/ your vodaphone USB modem plugged in? And have you tried using the net after that showed up? because I used to have the same problem with my USB broadband modem. I use a Smart Bro USB broadband modem. When that icon shows up, it should be ok to use the net by then. IF it still really won't work, I'd suggest trying to improvise using the steps for setting up a smart bro modem.
I hope this works for you
I almost forgot...
dude, as for the Windows application/GUI, I believe that it really won't work - same as mine. You'd be able to use the net using your broadband modem, but you can forget about the GUI. most USB broadband modem interfaces are designed for Windows only, so unless you're running Virtual Box or there's some new app or upgrade I don't know about, you can use the net but not the usual interface that comes with your USB broadband modem.
Hi Raisen44.
Have same Vodafone USB dongle. K3570-Z. Mine is not playing ball either as it doesn't let me connect to the internet (after letting me do so first time. really strange that). But it does show 'my' network for me to click on.
When I right click on the taskbar icon I am shown tick boxes for network and wireless and mobile broadband, as well as options to edit and for connections.
If I left click the taskbar icon instead,there are options to connect to specific wireless networks or the mobile broadband network.
The device DID connect to the internet-ONCE only-and I downloaded a couple hundred MBs of updates, which were installed. After which the device resolutely refuses to connect to the internet.
The APN for my device is shown in Ubuntu as pp.internet but in Windows it shows as PP.BUNDLE.INTERNET Tried both of those since but without success.
Regrettably I am only able to access the internet via MBB, so if Ubuntu and other Linux systems are not able to utilise such devices readily and easily my usage of Linux systems will need to be put on ice until things improve.
Wish you luck with your problems too. All the best.
