View Full Version : [ubuntu] Stopping ThinkPad 600X's disk from spinning
November 23rd, 2010, 12:09 AM
I'd like my laptop to be as quiet as possible, and the internal hard disk is the noisiest part. I found a command that stops the disk from spinning (hdparm -Y /dev/sda), but doing something as trivial as switching to another Screen window starts it back up. Is there any way to prevent it from spinning up semi-permanently? I'm open to hacky suggestions.

Apologies for bumping my own thread, but I am still in search of a solution. I've considered turning to a live CD that can copy itself to memory and run from there, but unfortunately I need to be able to access the network, and connecting to my network is no easy task, so it might be hard to make that work. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
