Quake 4 Multiplayer Problems

I am new to Quake 4. I recently installed the 1.1 Linux installer and everything went smoothly.
But it's the multiplayer game that I'm interested in. But I find thatnearly all the servers are empty. Is this normal are am I doing something wrong. I would have thought that a game like Quake 4 would have loads of people using there online DM games.
But even if I try to connect to an empty server it says that some files are missing and the server doesn't provide downloads, or data not in sync with server etc. Basicly 9 times out of 10 I can't join an online game anyway?

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Afaik, version 1.1 of the game was released too early bay accident, and quickly removed from the distribution sites due to some unresolved bugs. You might have better luck with another point release, fetch it from
http://zerowing.idsoftware.com:6969/

It must have only just been released though because I installed Quake 1.1 only a week or two ago.
