Looking over the list of games that are native to Linux or have been ported over, I see a lack of good quality RPGs.
Neverwinter Nights is the only one with immersive graphics and a good story to go with it, correct?
The only thing I load windows for at all anymore is my RPG fix. If games along the lines of Gothic 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment were created for Linux, I would have no reason at all to go back.

There's a loki installer for Planescape Torment and Morrowind (if you like thast game).
Baldur's Gate I + II runs either with wine or cedega.

Thanks for the reply. I was not aware of the loki installer for either of those games. I am trying to avoid using wine or cedaga.. the performance hit is just not worth it to me when I can just boot into windows and play the games full speed.
Ahh looking at the list (http://www.liflg.org/?catid=7)shows all of the games listed with the loki installer, but all for wine, not natively.

Isn't there a PS1 emulator? (I own a ps1 and 2 and all the games already) I usually just pop in a console rpg and use the gamepad I have for my rpg fix, of course me being me I'll be playing wow, a console rpg on the computer and than ff tactics on the actual game system.. mostly due to the horrible nature of cable tv ^^

LOL I don't mean to sound too picky, but I am not a big fan of the console style of RPGs. I do appreciate the reply though.
I'll just keep my eyes open for RPGs created natively for linux or ported over.
At least I have NWNs and Kohan(for my RTS fix) to keep me busy.
If I was a FPS fan I would be very happy with linux as a gaming platform as that seems to be the genre of choice.

There is also good Strategy games out there, if you like that genre.

I do! Can you recommend some that run without wine or cedaega? I have played Kohan, Wesnoth and Freeciv, and enjoyed all three, but I haven't found any others that I really enjoyed.

I see a lack (almost complete absence) of RTS games, Age of Empires and the likes. It's my favourite genre and although some games (sometimes) work with wine/cedega, it's among the least available genre's in Linux.

Kohan Immortal Sovereign is pretty good, if a bit dated and warzone 2100 looks promising. I remember playing it on Windows 5 years ago (or so) and while it wasn't outstanding, it was fun.
I haven't had time to try all of the games on the list and I am sure they are not all RT, but check out http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Strategy_Games maybe you'll find a couple of gems. If you stumble on a couple, please share!

For RTS, Globulation 2 is pretty cool.
For RPGs, you can't beat the original Ultima games. I know Ultima 4 and Ultima 7 at the very least have full native ports working now. They were/are working on porting Ultima Underworld 1 & 2, Ultima 6 and Ultima 8. Not sure how far along they are on them though, since it's been a while since I looked into those projects.
Exult (Ultima 7) should be in the Ubuntu repositories as well).
I was playing Morrowind with Cedega and besides a few little glitches here and there, it worked quite well. Now if only they could get Oblivion to work, that's my current windows crutch. That and Raven Shield (which they still haven't gotten to work right, and it's been out for a very long time....in fact, I actually originally started paying for Cedega to vote for that game.... )
Last but not least, there are always DOS games, which you can play with Dosbox. Nothing beats the old SSI role-playing games like Wizard's Crown and the D&D ones. Hopefully you have a system fast enough to play those without any performance loss. :D
If you're a bit more savvy towards wanting some excellent role-playing games, look towards emulators, I'm not talking about Console emulators, but computer ones. The Atari ST and Amiga had tons of awesome role-playing games. Ever play Captive? It was a Dungeon Master style game where you played four androids that you control from an attache case so that you can locate yourself to free yourself from a prison you wake up in after being in hybernation. Now that's just a cool plot. It's a huge game too. I played it back in 1990 and still never completed it after probably 100 hours or more of gameplay.

Re: Ultima:
IV and VII are the only ones in a decent working state at the moment, natively. Though in my experience, you need the CVS version of IV to run relatively bug-free.
Fortunately I-III, V, and VI run great in Dosbox. Not sure about VIII but I've never cared much for that one anyway.

You don't always take a performance hit using Wine or Cedega. Back when I played Call of Duty with my gaming clan, I installed it using the loki installer under Wine and I actually got better framerates than in Windows. And I didn't have any PunkBuster lag.
