View Full Version : [SOLVED] Ubuntu won't boot after install

imasynper

I just installed Ubuntu on my girlfriends laptop. The install went fine, but after it tried to restart, it wouldn't boot into Ubuntu. I was reading a thread about someone with a similar problem, and replied in that thread as well, but no responses to me yet. One person said to go here (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/) and run the script and post the output. I did that, and this is what I got:

Any help is appreciated. I'm installing Ubuntu because I told her it is way better than Windows, and so far this is proving frustrating. I'm sure it's a simple fix, I just don't know what it is.

Thanks

Boot from the live cd and choose "try ubuntu" then when the desktop appears open up a terminal and type

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
pressing enter after each line.
If no errors are reported run

sudo update-grub
Then reboot and see if the grub menu appears.

I think this is the clue:

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
partition #1 for (,msdos1)/boot/grub.
=> No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb

The boot loader should have been installed to the MBR of the laptop hdd.

Edit: Quackers is correct, the solution is reinstalling grub, but I think the second command should end on '/dev/sdb':

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb

Just for my own clarification - wouldn't grub from sda pick up the boot files from sdb1 as long as sdb1 is mounted first?

So i tried to do the solution from quackers, but i get this error when i type the second line:

cp: reading 'usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/915resolution.mod' : input/output error

suggestions?

Do you get this error when trying

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
or trying
sudo update-grub
which actually, on reflection won't work - sorry.

imasynper
November 18th, 2010, 12:14 AM
I get the error when typing this:
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt dev sda

So if that won't work, is there anything else I can try?

Quackers
November 18th, 2010, 12:20 AM
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
not
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt dev sda
ie with the / before dev AND before sda
or is that a typing error?

It looks like your 1 GB flash drive gets mounted as sda. Did you still have it plugged in when you used the liveCD to reinstall grub2 or are you installing from the flash drive?

If you boot from sda the Flash drive can you boot? Or does the drive number change to sdb? They both from BIOS?

The partition & drive number to reinstall grub may change depending on whether the flash drive is plugged in or not.

Quackers
November 18th, 2010, 12:26 AM
oops! I missed that. Definitely should be sdb if sda is the flash drive. Well spotted oldfred.

November 18th, 2010, 01:15 AM
The flash drive was actually just an sd card plugged into a card reader....uplugged that now. here's the new output:

Where should I install grub now?

Grub2 is not installed on your current drive.

From the LiveCD:

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

Do not include the partition number in the second command.

Once you reboot to your normal install, run "sudo update-grub".

That should do it.

That did the trick! Thanks guys. Really appreciate it. I'm sure I'll be back asking some more stupid questions lol

I just did the mop-up. oldfred and Quackers did the lifting. If you would mark the thread 'SOLVED' via the thread tools link near the top right of the first post they will see that their assistance proved helpful. Thanks.
