On a fresh install of 5.1 on an iMac I upgraded everything, including the kernel, then ran easyubuntu before rebooting. The only error I got had to do with a package that didn't download, and I went through the xorg configuration for the ATI videocard without incident, choosing the defaults.
Now, when x usually starts, the screen goes black.
I don't know anything about yaboot, never having used a mac, and I'm not sure how to choose the kernel that loads.
Anything I should try before reinstalling?

No need to reinstall, just type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" in a console, and select the vesa option. Btw, there is no binary driver for ati on mac platform, this is a bug in easyubuntu (hopefully, fix released soon).
