How would you rate yourself in terms of using ubuntu ?
My Rating: 5.3
I know intermediate things but not much more then that :(
Scale:
1= Very New - 10= Completly expericenced. You can decide if you are one of these or somewhere in the middle.

im really not sure how i'd rate myself. i dont use ubuntu, i use arch, but its really all the same when it comes down to most things. since you rated yourself a 5.7, would you mind coming up with some kind of scale as to what number is related to what abilities? im just wondering

90% of college students think they are above average...

I've only been using Ubuntu for a few months now, but I can accomplish just about any basic task that I need to and I'm perfectly comfortable using the command line, I just don't have a lot of commands memorized yet.
So I'd say I'm about a 3.5 to 4 or so. That may be giving myself too much credit still though. There's so much to learn. >_>

good enough to recover from an X crash using CLI, bad enough not to be able to compile a kernel...

Compiling kernels can be very challenging sometimes ](*,) I've compilied over 8 (soon to be 9) kernels 3 custom compilied kernels, the rest of them imported configuration. 2 of them wouldn't boot and they were imported configs. I'm getting ready to compile the 2.6.17rc-1...hope it works :???:

After 7 years with Linux and most major distributions + playing with BSD systems I think I could safely rate myself as 8/10 :)

Perhaps 7/10 or a bit lower. I'm pretty well oriented but don't have much experience at all. I'm pretty new to linux but took a deep dive when I eventually came into it; I succeeded in configuring a vanilla kernel and making it work, for example. :) I'm a problem solver, and I've taught myself to solve problems I get pretty well, but actual experience is lacking, of course.

What kernel are you running now ? I'm running 2.6.16.5 and I'm compiling 2.6.17rc-1 right now.

A 5 or a 6, I guess. I'm good with the shell, and with window managers, but there are some things I am not as experienced with.

Well, I have the GUI (Gnome & Nautilus) down pat, but not quite with the command line. I can compile and install stuff fine, but I'm still getting the hang of actual troubleshooting via the CL. I'd rate myself a 6/10 probably.

bad enough that without this forum or wiki's i wouldn't be able to do half the crap i want to.
I've learned enough to update, upgrade, and install packages through the terminal, to some varying degree.
I can modify my xorg, sources.list, and fstab with ease.
i know your basic basic commands, but um.. yeah that's about it.

I'm a beginner so I'd rate myself: 3. I use Ubuntu for about 2 month maybe and I enjoy reading this forum and I really like learning.

It's kind of hard to give myself a number because I think I know enough and have played with a lot of distros out there... Just give me a terminal and I can do a lot with it! So, I think I will play it safe and give myself a 5 then!!! ;)

2.5Thus showing the subjectivity of the scale. I was going to say 6 or 7 before Aysiu's rating, but now I'll go ahead and say 2.3.

id say probably a 3. ive only been using various distros for close to a year now and im still gaining the experience to be able to figure out a lot more things on my own. right now im a bit dependant on wikis/forums, which is never a bad thing, but im becoming much better at troubleshooting on my own and figuring things out by trial and error and configuring things differently.
along with a lot of people, id say that im like a 7-8 in windows and i come from a strong computer background. linux is pretty new to me and im learning a ton from it.

Ide give myself a 5, I defiantly know enough to be dangerous !

if danger is a rating of how much you know, some 'newbies' could be rated at 11.

I'd consider myself an 8/10 - I can configure linux entirely from the CLI, and have been using linux for 10 yrs this year - but there is still a heck of a lot left for me to learn.

i'm somewhere around a 7.
Most parts of my computer are my own compiles, i use completely custom config, and do about 80% of stuff from the command line. I also have 4 gentoo installs under my belt. I can do just about any end-user task, and many more advanced things (but i'm not a coder).
Or maybe i'm just an elitist ;)

I was about to enter a rating between 4 and 5, but seeing some of well-known users of this forums rating themselves, it calls for a correction.
I can only say i know enough about linux in general that will help me be productive at work where linux is platform, but linux know-how is not the end.
So, i'll rate myself a 2.2

I'm about average. Is that a 5? I'm a bit freakie, but that's all. If I need to, I can compile a kernel and apps. I can configure quite a few things from the command line (heck, I actually prefer editing /etc/network/interfaces to the network manager, it's faster!).
However, I'm growing lazy. I haven't learned how to add/remove services the debian way (rc.update or whatever). As nmap shows no ports open, I also don't know how to use iptables. I've also never compiled something big systemwise (libc, gcc, gnutils, X.org or Gnome/KDE). I should learn to package .debs.
To sum it up: I am fond of the CLI. If I ever needed to do anything unusual to solve my problems, I learned (be it a kernel, compiling things...). If the system doesn't require me to learn new things, I won't (though I'm probably learning IPtables for a debian sarge install I have at university).
BTW: One question: can I build a Pentium-M cuasi-optimized ubuntu? I mean, do an apt-get source of the kernel, x.org, libc, glibc, and gcc and change architecture to Pentium-M. Repackage the debs, and install them. Would that work? Would I have any problems?

Considering that I have used and still search for advice offered on these forums from user's who rate themselves between 5-8, puts me at about a 0.9.

using linux 8 years I think now... still there are so much things I've never had to look into.
maybe 6½-7½, But if the scale is that thorwalds has 10, I would have 3

I'd like to think that I was around 5, and then someone asks me a question and I prove, beyond all reasonable doubt, that I am probably around 1.

When all goes well, definately 9.9, but on a bad day...
Seriously though, around 6.
