A recent problem occurred with the memory in a desktop computer with an Asus P5N-MX motherboard. Since brand new the computer was running fine with 2 x 2GB Ram memory sticks.

For some reason it suddenly stopped working, and eventually using a memory diagnostic program I pinned the problem down to the RAM. Now I find that the system works fine on either of the RAM sticks alone, but if I install both of them together the system fails and the memory test suggests memory errors. This is strange as they were both working fine before, and the memory test passes if either of the sticks is installed alone.

I tried updating the BIOS, but this didn't help. Obviously this is not a Ubuntu specific, problem, but I wondered if anyone here had any ideas why this might have suddenly happened and if there's any way to correct it other than to deem the motherboard faulty and replace it.

Thanks very much
