I had to mention this, but I've had two collegues on my back about why they don't like linux (not that they've ever even used it!), I've stood my ground and explained all that I like about it, and my particular favourite, Ubuntu.

BUT, all of a sudden our local small time Computer shop (Whitecross street in London) started giving away free CD's of Ubuntu with nice branded packaging, and these aforementioned collegues have been all over it!

They haven't yet tried it but promise they will, and all because of a free CD!

I just wanted to let you know that the marketing is definately working in regards to promoting awareness, and possibly even converting a couple of grumpy Microsoftys - we shall see

One of the primary reasons a lot of people are trying to get into Linux primarily because of how Ubuntu is marketed. Before, people get Linux by downloading it and burning it on blank cds. Honestly, this isn't too appealing for newbies who don't care what's inside the cd. Or they could get the original CD but it isn't freely available on their local Best Buty. On the other hand, Microsoft's cds are shiny and nice and you can get them anywhere. With advent of Ubuntu, the cds look more professional, appealing and inviting. A lot people now see Linux as an operating system worth trying.

The free cd's do work, I have two converts. My two year old has my windows cd's in her toy collection, the free ubuntu cd's are too valuable to end up in the toy box.
People appreciate the ubuntu cd's, if not this time, I will convert them next time.
(much better than me showing up with a blank ISO cd and trying to convince them that I have the greatest OS ever)

Yep, that's the most known and most hated serial by microsoft, and not without a reason, million users have used it. (now that you can't turn off the serial check at windowsupdate anymore it's not a very usefull serial...)

Hehe, nice indeed. There was a time when i could remember almost the entire serial off hand ;)

Some of my friends once ordered a bunch of Ubuntu CDs just to trash them and throw them around. On the other hand, that made me aware of the OS :)
