howdy folks
just wanted to congratulate myself on getting this old thinkpad dual-booted with Ubuntu and Win2K...still very much a linux newbie...

I'd been playing with Ubuntu exlusively on it for a few weeks until I decided to go wireless...and the dang d-link card I bought isn't compatible with Ubuntu as far as I can tell...so I went back to Win2K just so I could browse and email on the sofa without so many leads everywhere.

Within 2 days I was getting serious ubuntu withdrawal symptoms, so I embarked on what turned out to be an epic saga of misery, pain, tears and discovery - and ended up FDISKing the dang laptop 4 times till I got it right...

You see I went right off at the deep end messing with Ranish partitioner and generally screwing my MBR right up, getting all confused and knickers twisted. Final inspiration at 2am this morning (GMT) FDISK it in half, just stick Win2K at the start and leave the other half unpartitioned..."I bet Ubuntu can figure out what to do"....and Lo! It did! GRUB even stuck the Win2K in /boot/grub/menu.lst for me (but I wangled it back up to the top and labelled it very rudely!). Much nicer than the M$ loader.

So now I can continue to try to get my D-Link G650+ (texas instruments chipset) to work with Ubuntu = after all, it's frustration like all this that makes the satisfaction so....satisfying :)

cheers
