howdy
i have played w/ubuntu desktop earlier versions of desktop and decided i was ready to tackle the server 10.10. i immediately ran into problems when i discovered it is quite different. i seem to have installed server ok, but user name and password is not accepted and sometimes keyboard flat refuses to be accepted. any ideas or doc's on server would be appreciated. i was actually looking and expecting a windows type environment and ended up w/command line environment...HELP PLZ
Thank You

ubuntu server doesnt have a GUI for security and lightness reasons.
have you set the keyboard language/type correctly (US/Dovark/qwerty)

why not install the desktop first and familiarize yourself with the server tools? The cli is quite daunting at first use, it took me awhile to get used to it.

+1.

You can install the same services no matter if you are running the "desktop" or "server" install.

If you really need to get used to the command-line, start slow and read the man pages and whatnot.

what do you want to do?

sudo tasksel
should give you some options... (use the spacebar to select)
and as other posters mentioned, start with the desktop version. Its the same as the server version, except it has a GUI.

Check here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1566503) for a large list of commands.

There's also a server guide here (https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/index.html). It's for 10.04, but not much really changed.
