I have been trying to get puppy to boot on an external hard drive. I used UNetBootin to turn the HD into a boot able device. When I ran the computer with the USB HDD in the first position It took me to a black screen that said "Boot:" on it and from there I was completely lost.

It has been a while since I've used Puppy Linux. Does anything happen when you type in the following?
puppy pfix=ram

Don't forget to post your question here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/
They're a bit slower at responding, but there is a wealth of knowledgeable users on that forums site.
However, if I recall you need to use the usb boot then then direct puppy where to install using gparted....but it HAS been awhile.

I'd rather go pmedia=nocd and pfix=noram
