View Full Version : [SOLVED] Live USB/CD blank screen
October 11th, 2010, 03:14 PM
I have 10.04 currently installed on my desktop. I made Live USB of ubuntu 64, alternate 64, kubuntu 64 and just for fun ubuntu 32 bit. They all show the first purple screen but after a few seconds it shows a black/blank screen with a flashing underscore at the top right hand and nothing else happens at all. Ideas? The comp is a 2 year old with amd quad core, ati 3850.

I just tried the 10.04 amd 64 live disc and it WORKS! This makes me think that the 10.10 doesnt have the drivers for my Ati card anymore? So I have to reinstall 10.04 and update to 10.10...?

Since I didn't want to install 10.04 to get to 10.10 I tried the Live CD again. This time I gave it 15 minutes and it eventually showed something. The black screen with text saying it was logged in as ubuntu. So I remembered seeing something on another thread of someone who had just what I did and it told me to go to the X11.
From the ubuntu "home" folder I used cd ../../etc/X11 and started X. It worked!!... I feel stupid and yet good that I am now installing 10.10. I also decided to mention all this just incase it can help someone else down the road.
Thank you Ubuntu for being a free OS that lets me not need Windows ever again. (my only complaint is the .m2ts and bluray support that is lacking..)

In the end 10.10 was lagging to much to install properly. It just hung at the hardware so I reinstalled 10.04. I updated to 10.10 but I was getting modprobe fatal errors on startup and it wouldn't let me install the ati driver so I went back to 10.04 again. I find 10.10 is a little quirky.
