My boss put me in charge of selling some old laptops. One of our employees wanted to buy one of the computers. I put a fresh install of Windows XP on it.
I placed two .exe files on the desktop. One would install Service Pack 3 and the other would install Microsoft Security Essentials. I told the guy, "When you get home, and before you connect the computer to the internet, double click on these two icons and install them. Run Windows Update before you do anything on the internet."
Two weeks later he called me saying that the laptop was broken. He brought it in and I inspected it from a live session and discovered the following:
1. It was running SP2.
2. It had no antivirus installed.
3. He had connected it directly to his cable modem.
4. His son was using limewire.
5. "Microsoft Office" had been downloaded through limewire.
I told him that I could fix his Windows install, but it would take alot of time and I would have to charge him money. I then told him that I would install and configure Ubuntu for free. He chose the free route.
I installed Ubuntu and enabled UFW and some apparmor profiles.
Two months later he called me and thanked me for fixing his computer. He said it was still working perfectly and wanted to know if I would install "that other Windows" on his desktop computer. :)
Ubuntu works very well, even for people who are not computer literate.
