Authors of this project say that wings, symbolize the independence and endless possibilities for free software.

Pretty cool, but there are more important things this money could be spent on.

I could think of other ways to mindlessly blow $3200US. How about meals for the homeless?

Pretty nonsensical. Everyone knows penguins don't fly. Well, Tux does, but he uses Jedi powers, not wings.

I think the statue is meant as a way to get the Linux name out to people, and I think it'll be quite successful. Things like this generally make the news and I'm sure many people would be curious to find out more about Linux after seeing this.

I could see this getting in most parts of the world if it is played properly.

One question:
How BIG is the statue?

How BIG is the statue?

No information yet, depends on how much will be donated.

Aesthetically, I like the wings concept. Look closely enough, you'll see that he still has penguin flippers. Kind of like with Icarus's wings.

That said, the money could definitely be spent more responsibly.

Local LUG of Western Siberia city Tuymen presented to the public draft for the future Tux statue. This is the first monument in history, dedicated to the little penguin Tux. The monument is a plaque attached to it a figure of the most famous penguin in the world, which has spread to the side this eagle's wings.

According to the author's idea, it symbolizes the possibility of operating system "Linux", where each user can take a direct part in finalizing the system, making for her own distribution.

- Who says penguins do not fly? Here's an example! Little bird itself has made itself something that does not give her nature - wings, - commented Sergei Mikhailov. - We wanted to do something to help taxi, namely the so-called penguin, to become more popular. In the end, stopped here on this version.

(Sorry for my English, but I think it may be interesting)

The most famous penguin in the world is probably from Madagascar, Happy Feat, Surf's Up or even Batman.

I bet 99% of the world population never heard of Tux.

Actually, MS says 4% use Linux. So, I would say more like 90% do not know who he is. However we can change that! :D

That is 4% of those who have computers, which is certainly not 100% of the world population.

I applaud your enthusiasm, but personally I don't think lack of users is what's stopping desktop Linux from gaining traction. What it needs is more support from OEMs.

Thanks!

Before I began this process, I feel about the two global issues in Linux

1. Linux problem is that Linux did not really feel grateful from individuals and companies. Its just used, and all that has been done on the basis of Linux does not have its logo or brand. If you buy a modem or router, tv or phone, then there will not be the word "linux". If you come to the ATM - that too will not be. If google chromium will enter the market, then there will not also be images of a penguin. People are ungrateful and do not want to thank the labor of others. Here in this very great injustice, against which is directed this monument. Monument to anonymous programmers of the world.

2. The second problem is that on Linux is essentially no advertising. Nobody wants to advertise what comes for free. People may say "I know Linux, so I'm smart", but people will never say" I use Linux because it is smarter than me. " Therefore, the Linux user community is not interested in promoting Linux. This is the second big mistake and the second a great injustice. I made a video and posted it on youtube, it showed people the totally different world of Linux, paradoxical, and unknown to the average user of commercial os

That's what I keep telling people. Why buy Microsoft software when you can feed the homeless! :guitar:

I'm pretty confident the best way to to help the most people is through free culture. Give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish, yada yada. Homeless people are only homeless because they haven't inspired by the Linux operating system and found that high paying computer job.

No offense Dustin, but as Linux is always changing yet keeping some resemblance to the past, the Russian monument better pictures this.

Linux devotees from the West Siberian town of Tyumen have obtained permission from the city government to set up a monument to Tux penguin, the mascot of the Linux operating system.

The monument is in the form of a winged Tux ready to take off into the air. The monument will symbolize the unlimited possibilities and independence of open software.

"The Tyumen authorities have backed our project. We are now looking for place where the monument will be erected," Sergey Mikhailov, the man behind the monument, said.

"I suppose that Tux will appear in Tyumen by the New Year," Mikhailov continued.

Linux was first developed by Linus Torvalds, a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland in 1991-1994. It is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration.
