To my fellow open-source minded pinoys,

I would like to share my website which is inspired by the open-source culture - WariPinas (http://www.waripinas.com), which roughly means "Imagine Philippines". It is a non-profit, ad-free, always-free, non-government affiliated website that aims to harness the power of one of the main fuels of open-source - collaboration.

Basically, the site aims to gather ideas, big or small, from any concerned individual on how to improve or help the Philippines. Some sites show the issues, but this site attempts to solve them. The idea itself doesn't have restrictions and is only restricted by your imagination. As what Einstein once said - "Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them.", hence innovations are most welcome.

If you have the time, I would appreciate it if you can check the site. If you like it and agree with the principles behind it, please feel free to join. If you have some criticisms, feedbacks or whathaveyous on how to improve or better the site, please do tell.

If you're interested to get more involved, there are a number ways like being co-maintainer/developer (volunteer basis) or by sharing and promoting the site to other Pinoys.

Thanks!

P.S.

Site was developed in Ubuntu 10.04 using Eclipse IDE and gedit, images were created and modified using GIMP, framework is Drupal CMS, DB is MySQL, and the web server is Apache. So hell yeah, it was a breeze developing the whole site.

P.P.S.

This was inspired by a wonderful Ubuntu tool - brainstorm.ubuntu.com (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com).

To moderators:

I apologize if I am shamelessly plugging in another site. If you feel that the post violates any rules or if you deem it as inappropriate, I will understand if you will remove it.

I appreciate it a lot, pre! Helps a lot with Google.

Nag-update pala ako kahapon:

Pwede na maglogin using your Facebook accounts, yun nga lang meron pa mga "limitations". Yun mga NEW users (hindi nag-register) na magla-login using their Facebook accounts, yun username nila will be the user ID nila sa Facebook. So magiging 12345...@facebook ang username nila :(

Oh well... Kung meron kayo mga suggestions, suggest nyo lang :)

Thanks a lot sa support!

Interesting, especially the 2nd point. What is the possibility of this being a citizen initiative and open-source one?

Is there a similar open-source system that has been implemented before that we can just adopt?

Maybe we can start small - i.e. have a web interface for people to input their travel experience (time of arrival, traffic congestion, people congestion, duration of travel, etc). In the same manner, people can inquire online.

Moving forward, we'll utilize SMS. I worked for a telco before as a dev so I have some connections and do know a thing or 2 about socket/network programming... That said, we will need some SMS service provider. Maybe... Just maybe, we can get some sponsorship with the telcos... Whachuthink? There are, afterall, business opportunities surrounding this area that hasn't been tapped yet.

Bus operators will benefit from this as well but I don't see them initiating this. I think telcos are more in the position to do this... or the DOTC (er.. unlikely)

Anyway, this is awesome if it were to materialize - a first citizen initiative perhaps tapping collective wisdom and open-source tech? Sweet.

I can provide some initial web space and the MySQL Database for now at my host (www.jplui.com) so we can get a rough version going. From the get go, I think we need to take advantage of the social networking trend, but I'm not sure how that would go if ever we'll move the site to something more permanent next time. I'll be honest with you, I do not have that much time right now to do dev, but I'll definitely be pitching in some work. I'll make you an FTP account and design the initial database, and then I'll PM it to you.

Oh, and could you copy what you said here over at the wariPilipinas website? That way, more people can follow. Especially since I posted the idea on my wall.

Exciting!:P

Hey man, hope you don't mind... I added in some more benefits to your idea and cleaned-up the presentation a li'l bit...

Just in case you didn't know, other members can edit your post - sort of wikipedia + stackoverflow thing.. if you don't like the change you can always revert it :)

Here are some initial thoughts din:

1. Thanks sa offer for the space an all
2. This can be a first
3. We need to make the interface attractively simple - something like twitter - get in - enter date - done; get in - inquire - done

Anyway, before we get into dev I think we should checkout the "area" first like discuss kung ano mga pwede ilagay sa system na ganito, how to make it mobile-web friendly, etc...

I'm open to suggestions and we can continue it dun sa kabilang site...

Anyway, off-topic - it seems there is this trend where businesses as well as government now taps its citizens, eh? :) So, yeah, open-sourcing is just not limited to software :guitar:
