Toshiba NB 100 netbook, Sony SVGA projector Display problem after upgrading

Hello
After downloading around 550 MB and 185 files through update files in ubuntu 10.04, soon after restarting i am unable to see any thing on my display, i am using Toshiba NB100 netbook and have sony XVGA progector, I see white blank screen on my Projector screen and streak of colored lines on netbook display, logon sounds are OK
Is there any way to configure display driver and resolution in terminal window at startup, as i cant use Windows mode, how to go into termianl at startup? Please solve my problem!

i want to login without GUI and I want to reconfigure my dispay, I think this will solve my problem, but i dont know how to do it.

Seems like i can solve this display problem by using using shift key at the time of logon
