Awhile ago I saw this pack of like a half dozen of Half Life games. I think it was Half Life, Blue Shift, Counter Strike, Opposing Force, and Team Fortress Classic. The games that use the original engine. I checked Gamestop & EB's website and they don't show as having it but I bet if I walked in the store I'd probably find it.

Anyway, I'm currently running Windows XP but when my parents get a new computer and I get to keep the old one I'm going to be installing Ubuntu on it and will have to get those games to run on that.

Can you get those games to easily run on Ubuntu? Will getting them to run depend on whether thir designed for Windows XP or an earlier Windows?

Well, I'm sure they can run (http://transgaming.org/gamesdb/games/view.mhtml?game_id=3337) on Cedega (http://www.transgaming.com/).

There's no doubt that it's going to run slower, but I know that the GoldSrc engine (Commonly known as the "Half-Life Engine") doesn't need massive specifications, so if your machine is just moderately new, it shouldn't be a problem.

For a guide on installing Cedega, go here (http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wiwimod/index.php?page=HOWTO+Cedega+CVS)

Those games will run well, especially in cedega, but they should run just fine in regular wine. Steam can be a problem if it is required (iirc, it is) in wine, but there is a good how-to (http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=1554) over at wineHQ's app database.

I just got back from CompUSA and I saw they have 2 packs with pretty much the same thing:

Half-Life 1 Anthology w/Steam DRM:
Half-Life
Half-Life Blue Shift
Half-Life Opposing Force
Team Fortres Classic
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AOE4BM/qid=1144543731/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-3501320-6067046?s=software&v=glance&n=229534

Half-Life Platinum Collection Second Edition without Steam DRM:
Half-Life Game of the Year Edition
Half-Life Opposing Force
Team Fortress Classic
Half-Life Blue Shift
Half-Life Counter Strike
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006FXIN/qid=1144543921/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/103-3501320-6067046?n=468642

The version with Steam comes with one less game than the version without Steam. But the copy of Half Life Platinum Edition at CompUSA didn't have Windows XP as one of it's requirements so I don't know if it would run on XP. And if I'm going to get one for Easter it's probably not going to come in time because when my parents tried to get someting off of Amazon before it said it'd arrive within 2 months.

But the one that runs with Steam requires access to the internet to play and sometimes my internet stops working where I live and I don't like the idea of all my games running under a DRM service that can ban me and make all my games instantly worthless. But than again when I switch to Linux getting the Half-Life 1 Anthology Pack to work will be easier because it's all under steam.

Will all the games in HL Platinum Edition without windows XP support run under XP and than run under Ubuntu when I make the switch or should I get the Anthology version that runs under Steam? Is installing all 5 of the Platinum Edition games under WINE something that even a newb like me could do?

Which one should I get?

Yes it will run with xp. No, you don't need internet all the time for steam(offline mode) only like every 3 months. If I wanted to get them to work in linux I would use the non-steam one, buts thats me.

If you intend to do any online play (ie Counter strike, opposing force, and Team Fortress) you will need steam, I think. My brother had to install Steam iirc to be able to join servers using his old cd of Half-life. So it would be probably easier to get the non-steam version, esp if it is cheaper.

If you don't want to play online its the way to go. Also you can install the normal way, if then you want to play online just actavate the cd-keys with your steam account.

Being the meat of the pack, Counter Strike (heck, once you get that baby online you might as well ditch everything else) requires Steam (for online play). Without the online experience of CS, you ain't even playing HL ;).
