Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, BOINC is now officially part of the Debian Linux distribution. Packages for the BOINC core client and Manager are available for 13 different platforms (alpha, amd64, arm, hppa, i386, ia64, kfreebsd-i386, m68k, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390 and sparc).

BOINC is a manager that manages distributed computing. Distributed computing means that if someone wants to get a job done, instead of just useing their own computers to sort through data it gets sent to millions of other people who also have the software installed on their computers. Distributed compting started out with the Seti@Home project that used your some of your computers processing power to process the data recieved by the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico and scan for radio signals that might be transmitted by alien civilizations living somewhere in the galaxy. Now it's used for everything from predicting the weather to looking for cures for diseases.

If Debian has allready included BOINC as apart of their default install should Ubuntu too?

It doesn't say anywhere that it's part of the default installation. Actually, there's not really anything called the default installation for Debian.

I thought that if it said that it was part of the Debian Linux distribution that it came on the install cd's.

Well if I misinterpreted that it still doesn't change the question. The Linux X86 version is only 3.63MB so it's not like it would take up alot of valuable space on the disc.

I'd like to see it included. I don't use it myself, but I have a few friends who run machines in their basements just to look for aliens. If it were installed by default, they'd probably be quite happy with that.

EDIT: Don't you mean, "Should Ubuntu come with BOINC?" ;) Of course, I'd love it if Ubuntu came as an add-on to the BOINC client. :D :D

I voted no. Because I don't want to waste too much power because for me energy costs money and boinc may shorten my cpu life. And because IMHO the average desktop user doesn't want it.

I voteed no as well because the average user wont bother about boinc.

No, it shouldn't be included in the default install CD's -- gnome is already demanding more space than the devs have. You will notice that cutbacks have occurred in the default install of Dapper, like most of the screensavers excepting 5, have been shifted to the repos. They are going to keep Ubuntu 1 CD come hell or high water.
It should, however, be included in the repo's.

I wasn't aware of that. If thats the case it shouldn't be included in the default install.

Where do download BIONC from? It says on the website that the Linxu version is out of date...

In the repos? Sure, why not.

In the default install? Nope. Bloat.

I was going to vote 'yes', but changed my mind. After all, it won't accomplish a thing until the user attaches to a project...
