I installed Ubuntu but when I did it it only let me do an install to a full disk. This wiped my HD clean of Windows XP. I need to recover some .doc files bit more importantly I need to recover my pictures in .jpg file format. Any help appreciated.

Here's some material to read through...

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery

Files which have been overwritten are probably toast, but there may be some hope for those files not over written, you'd be best to stop using the disk whilst you try to recover what you can.

Depending on the value of your data, a professional service might have some success but probably fairly expensive.

In any event, once you are done, devise a backup strategy so you are not bitten twice.

I am posting just because I want to suggest you not to download anything on your HDD, don't write to it and if possible, don't use it because you might over write the sectors containing your remaining files.

And if the data is worth that much, go for a data recovery professional.
