I am having trouble getting my logout sound to play. All my sounds work, the window sounds work, as well as the login, but I cannot get my logout sound to play. I have looked at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/214370, tried many of the solutions(ex. installing esound package) there, but to no avail. could pulseaudio be the problem? could it be just some code in a file? Has anyone figured this out?

The underlying problem is that Gnome cannot execute scripts at logout, the module for it is completely missing.

Not only the logout sound cannot be played, but administrators cannot have their users execute automated actions when they leave.

GDM can execute scripts at logout, but after logout, after the session is killed along with all the Gnome sound system. That's why the hacks around try to have GDM play the sound using various programs, extraneous to Gnome - aplay, bplay and whatnot.
