what exactly does the acronym ping stands for ?

AFAIK there are 2 explanations

1) it stands for packet Internet groper
2) ping command is named after the sound , which the sonar equipment used in submarine makes
(I got this information from Linux for you Jan 2009 edition magazine)

The author gave ping the name after the sound.

A colleague gave ping the acronym PING = Packet INternet Groper.
