I use Ubuntu 10.04. Something very strange happened this week.

I booted my computer and the desktop appeared normal. However, I was running nautilus and I noticed that all the folders and files displayed on my desktop are now in the ~ directory.

Folders and files that are in ~/Desktop directory are not all displayed on my desktop.

Some of the folders and files in these two directories are the same, but mostly they are different. All of the ones that appear on my desktop are in ~.

Does anyone have an idea what is going on here?
How do I fix it?

I don't quite understand. Did you just accidentally copy some stuff from your desktop to your ~?

What happens if you remove the files that are in your home directory? Then does anything show up on your desktop? I'd try moving those files somewhere safe, restart and see what happens.

I'm not familiar enough with Gnome to know this, but there's probably some setting that dictates which directory's contents populate your desktop--you might want to check into that.
