View Full Version : I liked Koala better than Lynx

I don't understand what the improvements are in Lucid Lynx. I was very happy with Karmic Koala. Immediately after "upgrading", I noticed three things:
-The log in screen is now ugly
-The window buttons are on the other side
-My keyboard layout is identified in the status bar
The first is annoying, but subjective. The second two show a problem, however: a lack of flexibility. I don't need to know what keyboard layout I'm in. I have a My scroll lock light lets me know. Furthermore, I don't want it there: its an eye sore. However, I'm stuck with it. There does not seem to be an option to remove it. Likewise, I don't really mind the buttons being on the other side, but why should I have to change? Is it so difficult to make that a preference in the display menu? If its there, I couldn't find it.
I also think its a mistake not to package the bundle with GIMP, which I love. Furthermore, I've found my favorite music player to be Quod Libret, however music players on the system still seem constantly behind the curve. Banshee is full of great features, but all of that is useless if it freezes up for three seconds when I type in the first few letters of an artist into the search bar. Can someone tell me what the big improvements are? I'm still happy with it, in that it isn't much worse than Koala, which was great. I just don't understand what changes have been made for the better. I thought over time they'd emerge, but after several months, they haven't.

but why should I have to change?
Because you don't like what you have .... ?

- really subjective. i kind of like the new colour although i have to ssay i also like the previous login screen. however this can be changed i believe...
- you can change it with a few commands or with some button changer programmes. or you can also just use a different theme (like clearlooks)
- turn it off.

to me it was opposite. Things worked better in lucid than they did in karmic

System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts
Make sure there's only one layout in the list. If there's more than one layout listed, you'll get the menu in your indicator.
I advise living with the window buttons on the left for a week. By this time you'll be used to them and you'll be able to experience the goodness of Windicators in a couple of months when Ubuntu 10.10 comes out.

I agree; I tried it and, to be honest, it ain't all that bad. It is like anything new; just need to get used to it.

I loved Xubuntu up 'til now. I'm kinda wondering if my old hand-me-down machine won't be able to handle future releases though. Karmic is light and fast on it, but on Lucid my applications take much longer to load and they're much slower doing stuff.
I'm a little ticked that it happened in a LTS version, but that's what I get for not buying a newer machine that can handle all the newest stuff, I guess...
When Karmic reaches the end of it's support I suppose I can just keep on using it, or go back and revisit Debian Stable, and hope it's easier to get working on my hardware than it was last time. Xubuntu always worked right out of the box - until Lucid that is, when they threw in PulseAudio (Why?? None of the default applications depend on it) and it had to be removed to get the sound to work. But it's it's slower than my old WinXP while Karmic just races along.

I hear in 10.10 they refresh all kinds of typical Gnome-apps in Xubuntu with lighter alternatives, more typical Xfce-apps. Maybe that'll help you out?

The window buttons are on the left on my Mac too but unlike with Ubuntu, I can't change that. Durn!
As others have suggested, try sticking with the buttons on the left. You'll soon get used to it and be ready for the windicators.

I have already exchanged all the heavier apps for ultralight ones, as they have in 10.10. It isn't the applications, it's the new kernel perhaps, or that invasive Plymouth stuff with it's evil tentacles reaching into every part of the system, I dunno. Karmic didn't have such dependence on Plymouth as Lucid does.
It's an excellent first suggestion, though, and useful for newbies who might be having a slow experience due to "heavy" applications on older hardware.
Thanks for offering it,
Robin

I though i liked Kolala better than Lucid but I nstalled a new HD and put Lucid on it. So far so good . I like it mainly that I can use my old drive with Kolala on it and use the new drive with lucid on it. Lucid has its pros and con's, it has more features than the other distros , its faster , most things that I have installed are almost automatic. I didn't like evo mail so I used the new Thunderbird .Lucid has its flaws but hell i can work around them and their minor. Multiple drives Hell yes, I missed that with Kolala. Well that's my 2 cents Rock on Linux.

It's too weird... Lucid started out slow and got slower the longer the computer was on. After about 4 hours it darn near froze.
I suspect that Plymouth is the reason. It has something to do with draws and redraws on the screen I guess. But the reason I suspect Plymouth is that if you try to remove it, it wants to take half the system with it (including metapackages like xubuntu-desktop). It's evil tentacles reach into every part of the system! All that just for a split second faster boot time?? Puleeeease.
Having a look at LegacyOS and PureOSLight... they might be candidates for this machine when support for Karmic runs out.
