I must be going blind or what, but at the side of each post, in the user's profile bit, below the number of posts, there's a small bit marked "style", but for the life of me, I can't find anywhere to set this field in the user cp section...

anyroad, nice work with the coffee "theme"... that ubuntu guru thing was upsetting me as people who were making a lot of noise in the forums with lots of daft posts were capable of getting falsly marked as gurus...

I didn't see "styles" either, but I did find "skin" all the way at the bottom of UserCp -> Edit Options. Also on the forum's main page on the right hand side just under the Firefox icon there should be a forum skin selection box. I changed mine to Brown, I'm curious to see if it says anything in the style box you mentioned by my name.

More edit:: Yep, everything works as expected now, cool stuff :)

You can select the theme in your user profile and it will update correctly now. :)

yup, it does it now... now would it be possible for users to create their own styles that others could then select?

What I want to know is, what's the deal with the "reputation" marker (located under the user photo & name)? And what exactly does "taveling on a distingueshed road" mean? How does the reputaion work? Maybe if I curse too much I'll be "wandering on a slightly eroded deer trail"? :-s
Mysterious.....

They are just the default vbulletin Reputation titles. I didn't feel like changing them.

Yeah, if they are going to use the system there should definitely be a big bolded sticky FAQ/HOWTO for it at the top of every section. I'm sure they'll have some explanation of it but the feature just got activated it seems. I've been in a few other forums with this exact reputation system so here's a really brief explanation of it;

The reputation system is designed to be a marker of how helpful a person is. If someone helps you out you should give click the add reputation button under their name, eventually when enough people give some reputation they get another green dot. More dots (more rep) = "this person knows their stuff"...in theory. A lot of times people don't know what it is or how to use it so good posts go unrewarded and I've seen it degenerate into a popularity contest as well (people with more green dots are "cooler" than those without, childish stuff like that). I'm not sure if it's active in this forum, but typically you can give negative rep points for trolling and generally unhelpful comments (like "rtfm n00b!!"). When a user gets enough negative points their green dot turns red. Also if someone with a lot of green dots gives you a rep and you have only one, you will get more rep points than if someone with one dot gave you rep, this is called "reputation power", esentially the more rep you have, the more your rep is worth.

As far as the distinguished road thing, it's just your status kind of, if someone has tons and tons they are "A sight to behold" and things like that.

There will no doubt be an official faq soon, but I hope I helped you understand it a little bit rather than confuse you even more :)
