I have a copy of ut2004 that I would like to backup - I figured I'd ask before I possibily wasted a dvd-r. Can I simply copy the ut2004 dvd with k3b so that I can use the copy to play the game?

thanks

Probably not. Most games come with built in copy protection mechanisms. I am not sure with this particular game but the general 'buzz' around the net is that it is indeed protected and the backup would not work correctly.

ut2004 uses SecuROM so not with k3b. I'm not sure how to do it in linux but you could in windows.

I put my cd's onto DVD, without problems, following a how-to on the web. (Sorry I don't have the link these days.)

Chase up the latest update patch & you will only need the disk(s) when you have to install the game, as the disk-in-drive requirement was removed in one of the early patches after initial release!

The reason the disk-in-drive protection was there to start with, was to cut down on pirating during the period of time when initial enthusiasm is high, after 6 months (from memory) they bought out a patch with bug fixes, & improvements, & the disk-in-drive protection was removed!

The DVD has protection to stop a standerd cd ripper from working. You have to use something like Alcohol 120% to bypass the DRM.

so, if I install the latest patches, I dont need the dvd to play? that's good to know.

hmm, I still would like to have a backup copy. I'm going to google around and see if I can find a way.

It'd probably be more helpful if you suggested linux friendly methods.. Some of us don't use windows.

Justa FYI you dont need the DVD "in" the drive to play in Linux. I actually think after a couple of win patches you didnt need it there either. Just install and put away.

Wine? Thats all I can think of.

as my understanding goes, no linux game has copy-protection, it would essentially be useless sine we mount the filesystem on the cds, and make it appear as part of our system. Basically, you can just copy the entire ut2004 directry to a dvdr, and then copy it back to your system and you should be fine. This is only for linux however. I do not know how it works on windows.

The registry is definitely involved in windoze.

So you can't do it with UT2k4 in windoze.

You can with others: I used to backup GP4 as a self installing (.exe) zip file. It wouldn't fit on a CD if it wasn't compressed.
