Hi,

I've just built a new computer but there is a problem. When I plug the computer into the mains and power it on, the green light on my mobo lights up but that's it - there is nothing else to indicate the power is going through from the PSU. The cpu fan does not power up, the DVD drive does not open, the HDD does not sound like it's spinning, the chassis fans don't power up and neither do the PSU fans. What's wrong?

I thought the problem might have been with the power switch, but I tested it out and it doesnt seem to be the cause.

I have tried the system with a combination of different (but same model) PSUs, CPUs, Mobos, RAM, and power switches (I ordered two of everything since I'm building two computers) and it still doesn't work.

Here is a picture of the basic setup I am using to see what the problem is.

Is there something obvious I am forgetting to do?

EDIT: this is the motherboard (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/206152) and this is the PSU (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135159).

try reseating the ram and cpu if you can. it is possible the cpu is doa, but thats not easily tested. try shorting over the power switch pins on the motherboard, to make sure it isn;t a problem with the switch wireing.

Even if the RAM and CPU were faulty, that doesnt mean the fans, etc would not work, does it?

I tried using different power switches and it still didnt work so I don't think that's the cause but the shorting technique is worth a try. Thanks

Start by disconnecting everything except the motherboard, and of course the CPU fan. Reseat the CPU and RAM as mentioned before. See if you get any response.

Does your MoBo have a speaker on it ?? If so, remove the RAM and try it that way. Things should power up and you should get beeps from the speaker.

Also, make sure the RAM is in the lowest numbered slot (either 1 or 0 depending on how it's numbered)

See if you can find a pinout of your power supply showing what voltages are where and check with a voltmeter. You will also find which pin is power on, so you can bypass not only your power switch, but your entire motherboard.

That's a start. Let us know and we'll go from there.
