View Full Version : Playing 'Thief' through Wine

Has anyone attempted to play one of the 'Thief' games through Wine? If so, what has been your experience with it?

I ask because I am about to get back a CPU with Linux Ubuntu as the OS, I play that game quite regularly on Windows but I am most interested in how this game worked or didn't work in Wine with Ubuntu.

Basically, doesn't work very good with Wine.

Tried Thief III just recently, and it's a crasher. Here' the bug I've filed: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5024 - no idea if there are any easy fixes or not.

Tried thief 3 a while back with no luck :(

Too bad, as the theif gahes are among my favorites; great story and gameplay (mostly). Havenat gotten through 3 yet though, partially because I have to boot windows to do it.

Thief I and II are playable, but do have problems - namely cinematics don't play, it's a tad slow, and the mouse is occasionally visible when it shouldn't be.

Thief III crashes in the menu at the moment, but Darkloader does work in Linux, so you can play fanmissions.

That sounds encouraging to me. What version of Wine do you have and how have you set it up so that Thief II can function in a playable form?

Over at the 'Thief' forums, TTLG, somebody there is working on a Linux version of a Thief Fan Mission launcher. Probably it might be ready in June or July.

Thought that might interest you.

This may be an old thread but I thought I'd share it anyway:
People are working on a project called "The Dark Mod (http://www.thedarkmod.com)", which is a total conversion of Doom3 and is based on the Thief Series.

If you liked the Thief games, this one is definately worth your attention.
Also, because it is made with the Doom3 engine, Linux is supported too :)
