Hello

I am looking for some help and advice on how I can improve the poor performance of My Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 installation.

I have A Dell Studio 1737. Dual boot Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid set-up. With Grub controlling my boot loader.
I'm getting rather frustrated with my Ubuntu and Firefox overall performance. Especially Firefox and my Download speeds are very poor.
For example. It took Firefox 19 seconds to open this Ubuntu Forum Beginners guide page. and the progress bar at the bottom of my page. has not fully finished loading. it is stuck right at the end of the bar. showing that the page has not entirely loaded fully.

To be honest my Vista 32bit is a lot faster and ore responsive than Ubuntu is overall. and my Download speeds and Firefox performance in my Vista installation overall speeds are great.
Obviously I'm using the same router when I boot into Vista or Ubuntu.

So Basically I am asking for help on how I can Improve My Ubuntu 10.04. Firefox and My Download speeds. and how I can make all more responsive All three have very poor performance overall in my Ubuntu installation.

What good tricks can I use to improve my sluggish performance for the above.

Thanks in advance

My Basic Laptop Spec are:

CPU: Core 2 Duo (T6400 2.00Ghz)
3GB Ram
ATI HD3650 GPU
320GB HDD
17" LCD Display

Have you disabled IPV6? Good place to start. If not, try instructions http://www.webupd8.org/2010/05/how-to-disable-ipv6-in-ubuntu-1004.html

Thanks for the reply.
Ill take a look at the link you gave me and check the site out.

By the way. Out of pure curiosity. why is it sometimes a good idea to disable ipv6 ??

And.. What is the difference between ipv4 and ipv6. Why is ipv4 A better alternative ??

From what I've read ipv6 is quicker, smarter and lot more scaleable

So far everybody's ip address is a bunch of 4 groups like this:-
xxxx.xx.xxx.xxx
So we only need to use ip4 which is quick for our computers to look up.
When we run out of numbers we will start seeing ip addresses with 6 groups.
That's when we will need to enable ip6 and it will be a bit slower.

Disabling ipv6 should fix the problem. Also check my Firefox optimization tutorials (http://firefox-tutorials.blogspot.com). There is one for speeding up connections (http://firefox-tutorials.blogspot.com/2010/05/preferences-tweaks.html).
