I'm interested in people's experiences, and tips for starting out.

I've got some experience with Linux, and some experience as a IT tech

I'm not a real linux admin (I don't have an impressive enough neck-beard) but I dabble in it. Best way to start is to have a crack at building different application servers at home (DNS, Proxy, FTP, Webservers, SMB, etc) and see if you can get them running. Learn by doing.
