Hi peeps! Are there any viruses, malware and spyware made for Ubuntu? How come we do not use any antivirus or internet suite to combat these, if there are any?

we dont use them because the need for it is so small, i read somewhere there are 700 ish viruses for linux and over a million for windows. that could be wrong

hhhmmm.. that's a very good question nirvblakr, as far as I understand it.. most viruses were designed for Windows since it is very easy to install a software, all you need is to create a .exe file which is very simple to do, all you needed is a text editor and a few commands/codes and that's it!.. fortunately on Linux environment it is not that easy to install a software and one more thing.. why bother stealing to something that is given for FREE?.. oh there is an anti-virus for Linux one of which is ClamAV.. wherein it is only used just in case you would like to transfer files from your Linux box to your Windows computer.

we only need them for M$(files)... if you like you can put some extra blings for your ubuntus like rkhunter and chkrootkit a different story though.

@nirvblakr

This (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510812) sticky post will go a long way towards answering your question about ubuntu security. It's rather lengthy, but very comprehensive and authoritative.

What are the reasons to hack linux? to steal information like user and pass keys? I think there is a keylogger for linux eh. pero mahirap yata gamitin DAW. Anyway for now, karamihan ay windows based parin ang mga viruses.

That's right! :D

I think "UBUNTU" means, "Humanity to others". so, Ubuntu users, be good, stay good.

(hopefully wala nga)

its more profitable to do phishing activities than write viruses or malware really. This has been the trend lately and works with all operating systems.

congratulations wikipedia + copy/paste for giving a list with some links too.
Its worth noting that most of the viruses are made for servers and were patched as quickly as hours after the virus was detected.

Thanks guys for the response. They are very informative. That's why I shifted to Ubuntu Linux to escape these nuisances.

A portal of malware attack is Wine. I know a friend whose PC was infected with sality worm- a Windows worm that is spread thru USB disks.

I was just wondering why antivirus software is not being discussed much in ubuntu as compared to Windows. http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/39.gif
