Well, I have given Ubuntu 10.04 a look and I just can't stand the changes. I don't like the windows controls on the left, and I don't like the plans for the "app icons" on the right. I just don't see any value in the changes made to the UI. And since 10.04 is a LTS release I can only conclude that these changes are here to stay. I really did try to like it.
My favorite Ubuntu is 9.10. It works perfectly on my Lenovo X61 Tablet, and I would love to stay with that. But it will not be supported forever and so I must find a new distribution.
After trying on several distros for size I have chosen Linux Mint. With it I get all the features of Ubuntu I like without any of the changes I don't. Keep up the good work Canonical your success is vital to Linux Mint's success, and I really do want to find a distro I can rely on.

I'm using it and love it but I don't like the changes either. I changed them, It's what you make it. Distros just give it a cover look. I usually tweak them somewhat

Agreed. I reallize I could have changed the themeing if I wanted to, but my whole family is on Ubuntu (8 users, 7 computers). I didn't want to have to change everyone's theme. And I still can't support the "app icon" idea. I just don't see a point in it. I would rather see them spend time on fixing things like the Palm sync that doesn't terminate the Bluetooth connection correctly, or better penable tablet support. And these are the only ideas I could come up with right now, because I am very happy with Ubuntu 9.10 already.
One of the things that turned me off on Windows was the constant change for the sake of change. Moving and renaming things just so they can try and pass the same old OS off as something new. I have young users in my house, and they are strictly users. They are not interested in be experemented on. They just want a good computer in a predictable way. Moving the windows controls from the right to the left adds no value and only creates frustrasion.

Use whatever works for you. I personally change everything to the way I like no matter what distro I use. I could care less how it looks when first installed.

Use clear looks and customize the button and color layout you want. Its on the right so no one will be hunting down the close, min and max buttons.
