I was tinkering with kubuntu a little in vmware player and I decided to set myself the above challenge with great results
It has the graphics of kde and the simplicity and elegance of gnome
I'm sure many people would like this
just another result of my tinkering.....
(note: the area of white just happened to be plauging me when I took the shot, just ignore it)

thanks
I even got the taskbar to only be on bottom and only the windows of that desktop be shown (on the taskbar)
btw, the process is very simple, I just wonder why no one has done it before

There's a step backward if I ever saw one :D

are you talking about windows?
yeah I know, but I can't install anything on the hard drive and kubuntu doesn't have that red hat wifi applet that is on the top of ubuntu which allows me to connect to the internet (anyone know where I can download that applet?), plus I have a router which requires you to go on to aol to get on the internet, so I have to go to a room in the house that recieves a signal from the neighbor to get onto the internet
here's the screenshot of the this amazing applet (when I was using ubuntu on live cd, but I'm just cropping it and using it for this purpose):
UPDATE: never mind I found it, it's at http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/, it's actually quite well known, maybe the devs can include it into kubuntu

no, no, no, you got me all wrong
I'm just trying out kubuntu, I'd like to keep myself open to wm's
so I'm just trying to fill up the spaces, that's all
I still prefer Gnome, but I'm just providing this to anyone who likes the gnome look but can't live without kde
I think they're both good wm's and I would use both without hesitating

its been done countless times. i did it the first time i used KDE, then i realized its KDE and not gnome

edit: I just wonder why no one has done it before and shown everyone that it's possible
I sort of wish gnome could get a little more eye candy (just like the open/close/minimise buttons did), but if it doesn't I'll be just fine

And the point is what??? You *CAN* do the same with GNOME as well...;)

listen guys, I didn't want start an age old fight here
they're both great wm's, some prefer one over the other, that's it
I just hope to stop this before we get too far into this argument

Don't misunderstand... no arguement intended, just some friendlt prodding... as denoted by the smilies :)
Goes to show that linux is great regardless of your chosen environment... ;)
Though KDE still sucks!!!

This is too funny. Naturally, the first thing people think when confronted with KDE is to try and make it act like GNOME. Maybe that does speak volumes. :D

You can make GNOME look and act somewhat like KDE, just as you can make KDE look and act somewhat like GNOME... but neither emulation is complete, as each is it's own beast, with individual strengths and weeknesses.
Apples and Oranges... and some prefer apples, yet others prefer the oranges.
What the OP does demonstrate, be it through accident or intent, is the flexibility of OSS... and I think that is something we can all agree on.

KDE - Konquerer + Nautilis + Firefox (or Opera) - Kopete + Gaim, actually .. minus most of the KDE applications. And KDE is wonderful.
I just really really really really hate Konquerer.

I think I got you beat man... This is KDE (http://www.lynucs.org/index.php?screen_id=89154308844145c916bcbc&p=screen) with a Gnome appeal --the best of both worlds

Here's the summary: Linux is based on choice, right? You can do whatever you want with linux.
Kde can look like Gnome, Gnome can look like KDE, I'm sure both can come close to WindBlows, and to Mac.
Both can be bright or dark.
The panel can be on the top or bottom, or in my case, I have 2 panels.
You can have 16 desktops, and you can have them all have 2 apps with 20% transparency.
You can have 20 Apache process going, or FAH going quietly in the background.
You can even have it on a cell phone!
Debian has a point. Linux is universal.

Well it's demonstrated that they can both LOOK the same, and maybe even ACT the same, but can they both FEEL the same. I have only used them on older hardware, but I noticed that while gnome had a smooth, responsive, elegant and solid feel, when dragging windows, pulling down menus or launching applications. KDE felt sluggish, unresponsive, and clunky, doing the same things.

I have to switch between ubuntu and windows quite often because of a small wireless router problem (it may not even be possible to call it a problem)

OK, now try http://www.xpde.com/ You can even make ubuntu look like XP if you feel like it. All that distro is is xpde around a standard linux base.
