so i finally found my disk of ubuntu 6.10 that i know works. if booted fine and after the disk got formatted it proceeded to install. but to only gets about 73% through the install and then promptly crashes and when I tried it again it does the same thing.

Any suggestions?

do a netinstall:
Ubuntu 10.04:

On such old machines I would go for lightweight Debian Mint LXDE netinstall:

I can't do a net install because we only have a dsl line on the main floor, and i can't bring the mac downstairs :(

If you insist on a CD installation, I would go for an alternate CD (not a liveCD). Simple text-based installation is always better.
