Hi This is First Post :o but I may as well make it a good one, I have been reading others experiences of similar Low-Display 800x600 minimal color issues on G4 and other PPC computers, Thought I had it close but still can't get it really gworking as it should, I believe it is all to do with the framebuffers (that don't exist and I don't know how to make these files and keep them on reboot. mine is a really old G3 with the Slot Load R128 Rage ATI graphics, 40 GB HDD, 256 MB RAM,740/750 processor. this is the result of my lspci -vv query on the graphics:

I think this machine only handles 800x600 and 640x480 right, or also 1024x768?

give me the output of:

cvt 1024 768
cvt 800 600
cvt 640 480

please You have to add them to your xorg.conf file in the Monitor Section.

PS which iMac G3 do you have ? Can you give me the link in everymac.com pls ?

It is all working now, found a site with a whole bunch of parameters which seemed to improve almost everything not 100% sure how but I have managed to get it to run at 1024 x 768 24 bit depth
I did add the video parameters into the append line in the image section of the yaboot.conf in the bootstrap disk

append="quiet nosplash video=VGA-1:e"

which may have fixed it too

I have attached my xorg.conf file for anyone else wanting to get one of these old girls working with a current version of Ubuntu PPC running the Linux 2.6.32-22-powerpc Kernel

I must admit it could do with some more RAM but apart from that it goes well.

Here is the CVT results it may help someone else

:~$ cvt 800 600

Unbelieveable, I need help again
HDD failure and a rebuild and a start from scratch but back to Low graphics again
I have fitted a 40 GB HDD and 512 MB RAM whilst the e a fitted a new BIOS battery as I think a few of the issues were as a result of that battery being flat.

this is the model of the G3

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac_dv_400.html

my cvt results are as follows

imac@imac-desktop:~$ cvt 1024 768

It is better but still very limited colour range 8 bit maybe and the issue looks to relate to the fact there just aren't any fb devices except for fb0 it is either that or the

ok, I have heard other people having trouble too with early iMacs. I never knew why, maybe because the framebuffer device is no longer supported by the new Xorg, maybe someone else can shed a light on that. Let's try to let ati do its work automatically, without forcing it to use a framebuffer device. Change the device section into:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Rage 128 PR/PRO (AGP TMDS)"
Driver "ati"
Option "NoInt10" "true"
EndSection

linuxopjemac
July 14th, 2010, 09:48 AM
If that does not solve the problem, try this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Rage 128 PR/PRO (AGP TMDS)"
Driver "ati"
Option "UseFBDev" "false"
Option "NoInt10" "true"
EndSection

Nothing seems to have changed, maybe if I change the color depth default to 16 instead of 24 it may behave better, can you tell me if that is possible here is the latest log, it doesn't look any different...

That didn't work at all, it loaded the OS but no X, I assume it uses fb0 and if you tell it not to use framebuffers even that fb0 one is not available....

Running it off live cd again ATM just to send you the message and replace the xorg.conf with the original
I should use two pcs but too lazy to fire another one up....
is there a way I can test X without having to reboot,

or even make these device files with makedev or mknod or something,

Thanks

Mat:)

you don't need to reboot

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

If you are xubuntu it might be xdm instead of gdm, not sure.

What I can suggest then is to go back one step and take 16 or 15 bit color as default, and delete the 24 bit section.
