A much nicer way of using IRC is X-Chat.

Homepage : http://xchat.org/

How to install in Ubuntu :

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install xchat

hi same question, i had a look at empathy instructions and they don't help. maybe i'm missing something. in empathy in add account details there are plenty of options but none for irc. i have 10.04 so the package for irc is already installed

I installed Xchat and though being a new guy to all this Linux stuff - and really enjoying it - I found it quite easy, kind of, to make my way around Xchat and then get into the Ubuntu irc rooms. So try Xchat and see how you go!

sudo apt-get install xchat

Kind regards,

Scott
