so i just had a thought and it might be a stretch but here it goes. ive only had ubuntu/linux for about 5 months now and i still feel a little lost at times. anyways my question is, is there a possible way for me to play old n64 games on my laptop ex. goldeneye. i always wanted to play it on an online server. my question is can it be done safely and effectively. and if so how do i start? what are the programs needed?

The only n64 emulator that i know of with an online function is project 64 (http://www.pj64-emu.com/) (http://www.pj64-emu.com/).

However this is a windows application, so you would need to run it under wine (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine) (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine), which may impact the performance.

If you want to play the n64 games without linux, then check up mupen64 (http://mupen64.emulation64.com/) (http://mupen64.emulation64.com/).
