I have an Hitachi 1TB USB drive connected to my 9.10 system. All seemed to work fine, but now when I click on the drive to access it, the drive hangs and cannot be accessed, and the desktop goes black. I have no desktop shortcuts, but the toolbar shortcuts still work. From that point, I have to shut down the system (usually through the power button.)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look in the log files to see if there is any clue there.

Sounds like a hardware problem.

Have you got enough power to the hard drive? A single USB port sometimes struggles to supply a 2.5in drive and will not power up a 3.5in drive.

Try a different USB cable. Yours may be faulty.

It could be the USB interface in the hard drive enclosure. If you can, remove the hard drive from the enclosure and connect it directly inside the computer or put it into another enclosure. If the hard drive is fine, the USB interface is probably at fault.

Sam.

I moved the drive from the front USB to the back USB port, and it seems to be working again. I will keep an eye on it, since it was working fine on the front port for about 2 weeks before it stopped.

Thanks for your help!!
