As maverick decided to ship unity by default and remove the UNE launcher I'm stuck with unity. Is there a way to remove the far to wide left launch bar? I want to use docky and save that space but didn't find a way to disable it. Thanks for your help!

log out
select gnome in the session menu
log in

now you can setup your docky & stuff.

I don't want to just use gnome as I like the clutter interface and the top panel, but sadly seems to be the only solution atm. Thanks!

From the looks of it the top panel and the sidebar are all one application. They are also both drawn with Clutter.

Unity is just barely alpha software, the devs have stated that there will be updates released every Thursday, I would suggest you wait and see what comes as Unity is in heavy development.
