Currently default video player in Ubuntu (totem) is not good one. It's not universal and lacks of many essential features like interlacing support, etc (it's gstreamer fault though, not totem's). So, I suggest to exclude totem and gstreamer video codecs, then mono stuff and include Qt + VLC. Ubuntu wouldn't lose any significant but get really universal video player.

Or (imho) the Gnome-MPlayer.

The problem with VLC is the codec system is not modular like the gstreamer system. And ubuntu can't be free delivered with proprietary codecs.

Over there Totem does the job very well.
