View Full Version : [ubuntu] How to test new harddrives

Hi I just bought new new hard-drives for backups. Is there a way in Linux to torture test the drives for failure. Is there some command that I can use to fill the drive with junk data.

I know how to this in windows but i'd really like a Ubuntu solution.

You could use the phoronix test suite to do a bunch of reads and writes to the drives. The best way to test a drive is with the manufacturer's tools, which are normally available as a bootable ISO file on their site.
