I am running Ubuntu 10.04LTS on a Toshiba satellite (rather old now, about 6 years maybe?) Video playback works normally in 8.04 but upon upgrade to 9.10 the laptop began to shut down as soon as a video file was opened. I was hoping the upgrade to 10.04LTS would solve the problem, but it still exists. Any video file format I have tried causes the computer to shut down. I have tried using Movie Player and VLC with the same result. All restricted extras are installed and video playback within a browser window works fine. Upon double click of any video file located in my home folder, Movie Player opens, there is a very short blip of audio from the file and the computer begins to shutdown. In 9.10, I could open the file from the file menu in Movie Player with success, but this no longer works.

I am at a loss as to where to start to troubleshoot this issue. I would appreciate any help.
