Ok guys and gals, I would like some input from you gaming masters ;)
I'm on the hunt for a new Sound Card (currently using the built-in VIA 8237)
and would like some recommendations for a budget to mid-range, high compatability sound card ....
My VIA even with new drivers from ASLA is not at 100% (more like 70% :) )
So high Compatability is a MUST......

Thanks in Advance
Akiro

chaintech av-710 , i dig it, only system i had issues getting it to work on was Freebsd. All linux's have the driver.

That being said, i never got around to using the 7.1 audio, but the SPDIF out works great for watching movies.

dermotti, have you played Quake 4 with this card? If so what issues (if any) did you have. What about the driver installation, any problems there?

The sound card just worked, i did not need to install any drivers.

Ive played ut2004, bf vietnam, and vendetta online and it sounded great. I only have 2 speakers and a sub for gaming, so i can;t tell you how surround works on the system.

Thanks for the reply, I'm doing a little research on that card and it sounds good so far ;)
Here you can take a look at some info I found....

EDIT:

EDIT - We have just been notified by a Phoronix reader as to the AV-710 Linux quality issues we had faced. Adam Williamson had pointed out ALSA needs to re-route all stereo output through the rear surround hack and then connect the speakers to the appropriate output. The improved software configuration can be accomplished by creating a custom /etc/asound.state. Performing this modification should yield higher-quality listening results than the stock ALSA configuration.

I've got a related question.
Has any Quake IV players had any problem with sound in the game.
I don't mean choppy / no sound but a lack of full sound support.
For example when members of the various squads speak are you able to hear what they say????
I've been trying to figure out if this is a misconfiguration on my part or if it's a hardware issue or a problem with the game itself.
Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. ;)
