10.04 installed - now headphones don't work

Well I installed 10.04 and it seems to have been a success with one exception. My USB Logitac headphones don't work properly. There is sound that is so faint it is incomprehensible. They worked fine on 9.10. And suggestions?

install paprefs and gnome-alsamixer (check its settings)

thanks - running alsamixer in terminal and playing around with levels sorted things out.
