I downloaded skype from their website and its just a tarball.

I place the icons folder in /usr/share/icons/skype

and the skype.desktop file in /usr/share/applications with root as owner.

When I do this, the Skype icon becomes immediately available in my Applications menu under Internet, but as soon as I logout and login again, it is no longer there. Does anyone have any tips for what could be happening?

Other users on my laptop do not have this problem: They can all see the skype application when they login.

Isn't there a .deb package available on their website?

For Intrepid? There have been 3 releases since then! I assumed that if they built it against Intrepid, it's probably best to get the latest tar.gz.

Nope, it says 8.10+, which means that it covers new versions as well. At any rate, if the 8.10 doesn't give you any trouble, why use another one, it is not a CPU heavy app or something that you can say requires system specific tweaking.
