I'm new to Ubuntu, and thought I'd try and fix a computer of mine that was loaded with software problems by reformatting it and installing Ubuntu. I've tried several times, and Ubuntu keeps freezing partway through the process, and I get odd messages (the latest one being:

(process:377): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)

sorry to say it, but this is probably an easily fixable problem by someone with know-how... but I can't figure out what it means/what to do ^^; any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

edit: oh, and I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 from a USB drive, if that makes a difference; tried installing 9.10 a few times from a friends CD, but it kept freezing after about 5% of the reformat/install...
