Hey i am new to this whole linux deal. But i love it so much so far. I have ubuntu 10.04 running inside windows and want to make it the proprietary OS. I have an acer aspire 5517, are there any problems associated with this laptop's hardware and ubuntu. I appreciate the help very much!

Welcome aboard. The easiest way to judge this is to run ubuntu directly from the CD - called the live CD.

This way, it won't affect your existing windows system, but you get to use the full ubuntu desktop.

Have a play, run some programs, audio, browse wirelessly etc.

If you don't have any issues then go for it - install onto your hard-disk.

There should be no problems, I'm running it on Intel 1.66GHz with 2GB if RAM and 20GB free space. You can contact me if you want some dual boot help. I just got mine fixed to work pretty well.

Use this if you have a flash drive:

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Just download the .iso and plug in the flash drive and it will install. You will have to change the BIOS to boot from a USB before the Hard Drive.

If you want help, just message me.

I am new to this also, but I have gotten some things to work. (Not Advanced User at All Though)
