hello,

this HP C4485 was previously detected on my Dell Vostro 1310 via USB port. Nothing has changed in terms of settings, etc. The same HP printer is no longer detected.

If I run sudo hp-setup, I get the following error message:

:~$ sudo hp-setup

Can you please help? Thanks.

does it show up if you open a terminal and run

lsusb

with or without connecting the printer via USB, this is what I get:

~$ lsusb

looks like there is an issue with it being detected. Is it plugged into a hub or direct to the computer? try disconnecting it and reconnecting it. Wait about 20 seconds and then run

dmesg | tail
and see what it says.

it's plugged into the laptop.

I tested the laptop's three USB ports (each time disconnecting and reconnecting as you suggested):

no mention of the printer on any of the ports. I know this may sound like a dumb question but is the cable plugged into the printer and is the printer turned on? maybe try another cable.

I checked and the cable is connected to the printer all right. I'll buy another cable and try + get back on this in a couple of days. Thanks for your help in the meantime.

Got a new cable and it seems to work now - will mark this as solved and open a new thread should it act up again. thanks for your help!
