Truth is, my motherboard sucks. 2gb ram at max, does not support most video cards, very slow bios, and accepts 1 dual 64bit processor. I really need a new board. Since I'm soon going to be making about $144 a week, I will be able to afford more stuff. What is a good board to buy? I don't care what it is, be it a microATX or something else, as long as I know what case to buy. What should I get?

VIA in my opinion are the best, and ASUS...

Like, what model. Newegg link? Something that supports 8b ram and 2 quad processors. You know, maxed out options?

I'll throw in a vote for ASRock, or a high-end ASUS.

You're not going to need more than one processor...

This is what I have now:

:), this will take approx. 31 days to save up for. I'm gonna use the video card from my current computer, and I have a 500w power supply. This new computer's gonna rock.

I compile things all the time, my swap is usually 1/4 full most of the time. :)

Will my list work?

I have this motherboard : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130250&cm_re=MSI_770-G45_AM3_AMD_770_ATX_AMD_Motherboard-_-13-130-250-_-Product

Swap has nothing to do with processors, it's RAM. Do you think compiling things a few seconds faster is worth the $250, or more, that two processors would cost?

e: Your link didn't work, by the way.

in most cases- dual processor setup is overkill (for desktop).
better- invest in something dual or quadro core (i5/i7 or something from AMD); but do not forget about fast memory- 6g or more- you can always keep /tmp /and similar dirs/ in ramdisk- it speeds compilation a lot.

I believe Asrock is the low-end brand name of ASUS.

dragos240, why do you need such ultimate specs? :o

I would suggest:

You say you want something nice? Throw in a nice CPU cooler and overclock that sucker. Then get a better PSU, 8GB of DDR3 memory, and a nice video card like a Radeon HD5870. THAT would be a killer system for anything you throw at it.

I wasn't sure if it would work. Here is the picture:

Wait, what CPU you have? What RAM and GPU? Do you want whole new computer or just a board? If only a board, you must tell what you have, or else won't work.

lol, why did you selected 2 CPUs on that picture? Only one can fit in. Also, that CPU is crappy. Look at Phenom II X4 945 or 955BE which is more expensive, or Phenom II X3 730 which has one less core but more cache and cost about the same as that one.

PS: That boards might be to much, it have 4 PCIe graphics ports, you do not need 4 graphics cards. Also, in my experience MSI makes pretty crappy high end boards (low quality, hot and lousy on overclocking and HE must overcdlock well, why HE board otherwise?). If you want high end boards look at DFI, EVGA, Asus or something like that.

I just upgraded my system with THIS Board (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-408-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782) <--- No, you don't need to register just to view.

Onboard sound isn't all that great yet. I assume it's because the board is too new. I'm buying a Xonar sound card anyway so...meh!

You only need ONE cpu.. That has X amount of cores.

My own is a single CPU (Multiple core) Phenom 965

This actually has four Gigs of RAM and is running Lucid 64 bit so... dunno why it says 3.9gb ?

I would opt for the Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR as it supports Snow Leopard and it's duel 32/64 bit with up to 16gb ram.

No USB 3 on it though.

Exactly. You cant run DDR2, or AM2 CPUs in the AM3 8XX chipset boards the majority of people are posting here...

If you want new RAM, board, CPU, then AM3 is good. If you want to reuse your older RAM and CPU AM3 is going to suck.

+1. On both sets of advice.

*Edit- Gigabytemakes some nice motherboards as well, worth a look.

A Core2Duo motherboard? Why? C2D CPUs are now more expensive than they were, and socket775 has no upgrade path at all anymore.
