View Full Version : [SOLVED] CUPS: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed"

I can print to either printer on the server if I am printing a .doc / .txt. If I want to print a graphic file such as a .jpg from say Gimp, the job will spool but the printer reports "CUPS: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed""

To try and fix this I have restarted cups on the server, reinstalled ghostscript, gsfonts, guttenprint and anything that seems to be related.

I cannot figure out what is wrong here but it does seem to be related to the file type rather than the system not working.... Is there a file filter in the cups.conf file that I have not set .... but I cannot remember there being that sort of setting?

Hello,

If you want to try to find out what the failure could be,

sudo gedit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
and change "LogLevel warn" to "LogLevel debug".

Restart the cups daemon (or your computer) and then try printing again. Then you should be able to

sudo gedit /var/log/cups/error_log
and find the error.

If you want, feel free to post it here. Not sure how much I can help you though.

Jon, thank you for your suggestions. After looking at the error log I think the problem is related to Ghostscript. It apparently has an unrecoverable error and makes an exit. I am running Ghostscript version 8.62 and the latest available is 8.71.

I was wondering why I had not got at least the update to 8.64 and tried to run apt-get update. Well that exits with lots of errors. Something about remote servers not behaving. I do not quite believe the error and so I have to sort this updating error out first before I can push further with cups ....

You could try going to System>Administration>Software Sources, and selecting "Other..." under the "Download from:" section to see if another server works better.

Does sound like a larger problem though.

So I replaced the sources list and then everything is found to be up to date .. (in so far as the repositories have the latest files).

But I am a bit stuck with cups. I have removed cups and also purged all files. This seems to clear out everything but for removing the printers. No idea how to clear those out as well.

I have also reinstalled. I can print a .txt, a web page and even a .pdf with graphics. But not a jpg. The following shows what happens when I try to print a jpg.

Basically the job will go to the print queue, the data light on the printer will blink and then the job will drop out of the queue and the printer goes back to sleep.

cups was originally printing all jobs. Overnight this problem appeared and I have zero idea of what nor why. My focus is to try and get the HP Laserjet working and then move on to the Epson Stylus Photo.

Overnight this problem appeared and I have zero idea of what nor why.

I'll take a look at the log when I get a chance.

In the meanwhile, you might try using a Live CD and seeing if you can print a JPEG using that just to see if it works.

I am just wondering if it would be smart to remove cups again, purge everything and also take out the printers. Apparently lpadmin -x printername will do that. This would remove all crud and provide a clean base but I am not convinced that it will do much positive.

A message has appeared which relates to the Epson printer.

Nice message and perhaps this explains why that printer is not working but I am not so sure what to do to fix this.

Well both printers are USB devices but I do not quite understand the second HP entry. I think I am getting confused, trying too many different things since I thought I had used ipp but there are no entries..

I can print the jpg if I plug in the printer directly to the client. Not so sure about using a live cd on a server though ...
